The appeal of Austin

Austin, the vibrant capital city of Texas, is home to an estimated population approaching 1 million as of 2021, with the broader Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area exceeding 2 million residents. This growth is driven, in part, by its allure as a more affordable alternative to major U.S. cities like San Francisco or New York. However, while utilities, healthcare, and transportation may be comparatively economical, the city’s burgeoning popularity has led to increasing housing costs, particularly in sought-after neighborhoods. Despite these rising expenses, Austin’s quality of life remains a major draw. Frequently ranking among the best U.S. cities to reside in, Austin boasts an eclectic mix of cultural events, top-tier educational institutions, and a plethora of outdoor activities. The city’s green spaces like Zilker Park, coupled with its title as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” underscore its harmonious blend of urban vitality and recreational opportunities.

For lawyers considering relocation, choosing the right neighborhood becomes a critical step to harnessing the city’s opportunities and lifestyle. Here’s a list of some of the best neighborhoods for legal professionals, considering factors like proximity to the city’s legal and business hubs, accessibility, amenities, and community vibe:

Downtown Austin:

  • Why: At the city’s pulsing core, Downtown Austin is a beacon for professionals, especially lawyers. Its proximity to courthouses, top-tier law firms, and business centers means minimal commute times.
  • Perks: Downtown offers a mix of contemporary condos, high-rise apartments, and historic buildings. The vibrant nightlife, eclectic eateries ranging from food trucks to gourmet restaurants, cultural institutions like theaters and museums, and recreational spots like Lady Bird Lake provide a balanced work-life rhythm.

East Austin:

  • Why: Once a sleepy area, East Austin has experienced a renaissance, becoming a hotspot for professionals and creatives alike. With a plethora of renovated bungalows, new condominiums, and proximity to downtown law firms, it’s becoming increasingly attractive to lawyers and Austin newcomers.
  • Perks: A vibrant mix of art galleries, trendy bars, gourmet food trucks, and historical sites. Its cultural diversity, combined with a blend of old and new, adds depth to its appeal.

Bouldin Creek:

  • Why: Situated just south of Lady Bird Lake, Bouldin Creek offers a central location with the charms of a tight-knit community. The blend of walkability and easy access to both South Congress and downtown makes it perfect for lawyers keen on minimizing commute times.
  • Perks: A veritable green haven, Bouldin Creek is dotted with parks like the Nicholas Dawson Park. Its community-focused ethos is evident in its array of local events, monthly art shows, and a myriad of culinary delights ranging from vegan treats to Tex-Mex staples.

Northwest Hills:

  • Why: Offering a respite from the urban jungle, Northwest Hills presents itself as a suburban utopia. Its vantage points offer panoramic views of Austin, making it a draw for lawyers who cherish both city connectivity and natural splendor.
  • Perks: The Far West Boulevard, lined with cafes, boutiques, and fitness centers, serves as the neighborhood’s main artery. With a mix of mid-century and contemporary homes, there’s architectural diversity to suit varied preferences.

Circle C:

  • Why: Synonymous with community-centric living, Circle C Ranch is an emblem of planned suburban perfection. For lawyers with families, its wealth of amenities and schooling options makes it a prime choice.
  • Perks: Its dedication to fostering community spirit is evident in events like the farmers’ market and outdoor concerts. The Grey Rock Golf Club, hiking trails, and a plethora of parks make it a recreational paradise.

Lakeway:

  • Why: Located about 25 miles west of downtown Austin, Lakeway provides a serene lakeside retreat. It’s a sanctuary for lawyers seeking to juxtapose their intense professional lives with a peaceful personal space. Many of the lawyers we help relocate to the Austin area choose to reside in Lakeway.
  • Perks: Beyond the allure of Lake Travis, with its boating and water activities, Lakeway hosts the World of Tennis complex, numerous parks, and the Hill Country Galleria for shopping enthusiasts. The local community center’s events and classes, from arts to fitness, ensure there’s always something to engage in.

Westlake Hills:

  • Why: A blend of luxury and seclusion, Westlake Hills stands as an enclave for those seeking both sophistication and serenity. Although it is its own city and not just a neighborhood of Austin, it’s located to the west of Austin and is considered part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area. Known for its luxury homes, scenic views, and highly regarded schools, West Lake Hills offers a more suburban feel while still being in close proximity to Austin’s downtown area. Lawyers often gravitate here for its upscale residences and the peaceful ambiance that contrasts with courtroom intensity.
  • Perks: With sprawling estates, breathtaking hill country views, and highly rated schools, it’s a family-oriented haven. Its accessibility to both Downtown Austin and outdoor spots like Barton Creek Greenbelt makes it doubly attractive.

Tarrytown:

  • Why: A fusion of historical charm and modern living, Tarrytown is an inviting neighborhood, conveniently positioned near downtown. Its proximity to the University of Texas School of Law also makes it a favorable spot for academic-leaning legal professionals.   While technically their own independent neighborhoods, some consider Old Enfield, Pemberton Heights, and Brykerwoods a part of Tarrytown, but locals and native Austinites do not.  Instead, Old Enfield, Pemberton Heights, and Brykerwoods are much older than Tarrytown and are sandwiched between Tarrytown and the University of Texas, with the added benefits of being even closer to downtown and the University of Texas, even older and more established trees, and proximity to the newly remodeled and expanded Pease Park and the Shoal Creek Hike and Bike Trail.
  • Perks: Streets adorned with mature trees, a variety of architectural styles from mid-century homes to modern buildings, and recreational spots like Lake Austin. The neighborhood radiates a calm, community-focused environment interspersed with boutique shops and cafes.

Hyde Park:

  • Why: As one of Austin’s oldest neighborhoods, Hyde Park exudes a vintage charm. Its central location and surrounding intellectual aura, courtesy of the University of Texas, make it suitable for lawyers seeking a lively yet cultured atmosphere.
  • Perks: Victorian houses, bungalows, and parks intersperse with local art galleries, unique cafes, and artisan shops. The neighborhood also hosts events, fostering community engagement and offering social relaxation outside of legal duties.

Clarksville:

  • Why: Nestled adjacent to Downtown, Clarksville offers the dual advantage of downtown connectivity and a cozy neighborhood essence. Lawyers who desire a mix of urbanity and community often find Clarksville a perfect match.
  • Perks: Historic homes blend seamlessly with modern apartments, while local groceries, quirky boutiques, and cozy eateries give it a distinctive flavor. The annual Clarksville Jazz Festival is a testament to its vibrant community spirit.

Travis Heights:

  • Why: This picturesque neighborhood strikes a balance between urban convenience and laid-back living. Its strategic location south of Lady Bird Lake makes it attractive for lawyers who frequent Downtown Austin.
  • Perks: A diverse array of homes from classic bungalows to modern designs, parks like Stacy Park and it’s year-round lap swimming pool, and the buzzing South Congress Avenue (SoCo) known for its shopping, dining, and music venues. The blend of young professionals, families, and artists gives it a unique vibe.

Barton Hills:

  • Why: A stone’s throw away from Austin’s downtown, Barton Hills combines nature’s tranquility with city convenience. Lawyers who appreciate green spaces and outdoor activities after courtroom battles often find solace here.
  • Perks: Proximity to the iconic Barton Springs Pool and Zilker Park provides ample opportunities for outdoor rejuvenation. With a mix of ranch-style homes, modern builds, and apartments, it caters to varied housing preferences. Local schools and community events add to its appeal for families.

Every neighborhood in Austin presents its own unique blend of culture, convenience, and charm.
