Intellectual Property and Patents

Intellectual property law helps protect the rights of creators and owners of original works, inventions, and other forms of creative and innovative expressions. Intellectual Property attorneys help clients protect their intellectual property by legalizing the patent, copyright, trademark, or trade secret with the right governmental entities, and help enforce these intellectual property rights through litigation. Our experts have placed many IP attorneys in law firms and in-house legal departments in Austin, Dallas, and Houston and across Texas for more than a decade.

Positions

Common Questions

What qualifications or areas of experience are currently most in demand for intellectual property and patent attorneys?+

There is a lot of demand for cybersecurity and lawyers with data privacy expertise as well as continued demand for lawyers with patent infringement litigation experience. Patent litigation experience can be especially valuable when it involves technical arts or highly specialized technology. Employers may also value IP attorneys who understand how intellectual property issues intersect with products, branding, licensing, compliance, and business strategy.

Do you place both patent litigators and IP transactional attorneys?+

Yes. We place both patent litigators and IP transactional attorneys. These roles can require very different skill sets, so the search needs to be clear about whether the employer needs litigation experience, prosecution experience, licensing experience, transactional IP support, trademark and copyright work, privacy experience, or another specific background.

Patent litigators may be needed for infringement disputes, technical litigation, and high-stakes intellectual property matters. IP transactional attorneys may support licensing, commercial agreements, technology transactions, brand protection, diligence, or in-house IP strategy. We help employers define the need before identifying candidates.

How can you help an attorney find an in-house position in intellectual property law?+

We start with an IP in-house job and find lawyers to fit it. Our work typically begins with an open role, then we identify attorneys whose experience matches that opportunity. We do not start with a general promise to find an in-house job for every IP attorney. Instead, we match candidates to specific searches where their background aligns with what the employer needs. For attorneys interested in moving in-house, it helps to be clear about the type of IP work they have handled, the industries they know, and the business-facing experience they can bring to a legal department.

How confidential is the recruiting process for candidates who are currently employed?+

We zealously protect the confidentiality of our candidates’ search. Confidentiality is central to our process, especially for candidates who are currently employed. We protect the confidentiality of a candidate’s search and reinforce that confidentiality when submitting the candidate to an employer.

That protection matters in the Texas legal market, where lawyers, firms, and in-house teams are often more connected than people realize. We do not treat a candidate’s interest casually. References are not checked until the offer stage, which helps protect candidates who are employed and exploring a potential move discreetly.

Do you work with employers outside Texas?+

We focus generally on placements in Texas. While we occasionally handle out-of-state searches through client relationships, we work primarily with Texas employers and candidates across Austin, Dallas, Houston, and the broader state legal market. From time to time, existing clients or relationships ask us to handle searches outside Texas, and we can do that when it makes sense.

How do you identify and connect with leading IP and patent talent?+

We identify IP and patent talent through a combination of legal market knowledge, internal candidate relationships, publicly available lawyer information, recruiter-specific databases, targeted outreach, personal networking, and long-standing experience in the legal recruiting industry.

For IP searches, we look beyond the general label of “IP attorney.” The search may require patent litigation, technical arts experience, privacy knowledge, trademark and copyright work, licensing experience, or a specific industry background. The more precise the employer can be about what the role requires, the more effective the search can be.
